Jean Hakiza
With over 367,000 baptized members, Adventists comprise the second largest church in the country of Rwanda. Following the 1994 genocide, in which the church lost over 150 ordained pastors (and many members) the church membership skyrocketed as people chose to put their trust in God. The resulting shortage of pastors, (there was one for every 2,000 members) led genocide survivor Jean Hakiza to turn his life direction in answer to the pastoral call. Currently studying for his master’s of divinity degree at Andrews University, Jean, an experienced teacher and translator, will return with his family to Rwanda upon graduation.
